The Legacy of Henry

Patrick Henry is considered the “Voice” of the American Revolution.  He stood for the individual liberty of his fellow colonists and used his powerful oratory skills to move colonial leaders to action against state-sponsored tyranny.

Our children know that George Washington was the first president of our nation, Thomas Jefferson was the writer of the Declaration of Independence, and Benjamin Franklin was a great statesmen and inventor, but do they know how important Patrick Henry was to the American Cause?  When Henry proclaimed “Give me liberty, or give me death!” he called an emerging nation into action!

The Center’s Patrick Henry Legacy Program works to keep Patrick Henry’s strong values of free speech, individual liberty, courage, love of country, faith, family, and righteous character alive in the hearts of all patriotic Americans.  Today, the program ensures the memory of Patrick Henry by actively and directly educating the future leaders of America as to Henry’s rich legacy.

"Liberty or Death," a documentary on Patrick Henry was
funded in large part by the Patrick Henry Legacy Program.

Since its inception the Patrick Henry Center Legacy Program has successfully promoted the lasting Legacy of one of our greatest but sometimes least recognized Founding Fathers.

  • Through the generosity of our donors, we provided major funding for the production of “Liberty or Death,” a DVD documentary on the events in pre-Revolutionary Virginia, culminating in Henry’s most famous speech.

  • We provided a grant to St. John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia – the site of the Second Virginia Convention and Henry’s stirring “Liberty or Death” speech –  for the creation of new costumes for professional actors to reenact the convention, providing an interactive window into history that appeals to patriotic Americans of all ages.
  •  Scotchtown Plantation – the Henry Family home during the turbulent years leading up to and in the beginning of the Revolution – was granted funds by PHC to provide operational costs, signage to the site, as well as a Historic Structures Report to help preserve the site for future generations.

We encourage all parents to teach children about the rich legacy left to all Americans by Patrick Henry, by having them literally walk in Henry’s footsteps at the various Patrick Henry historical sites in the Commonwealth of Virginia, where history will come alive.  Parents and children will leave inspired and grateful for the courage of Patrick Henry.
